Are the thousands of Satellites, a danger to our climate?
Why isn’t there talk about all the space junk (satellites) circling our Earth daily, at the #COP30 summit?
The growing number of satellites and the rocket launches required to put them in orbit do have a negative impact on climate change, primarily through atmospheric pollution from re-entering satellites burning up and the emissions from launches.
Satellites release pollutants like aluminum oxide and nitrogen oxides as they burn up in the atmosphere, which can disrupt atmospheric temperatures and potentially affect the ozone layer. Additionally, rocket launches release soot, and the increased risk of collisions in orbit also presents a significant environmental concern. primarily through atmospheric pollution from re-entering satellites burning up and the emissions from launches.

Studies suggest these metallic particles can alter the thermal balance of the atmosphere, potentially causing both warming and cooling effects, and could also impact wind patterns and ozone recovery.
As of mid-2025, there are over 11,700 active satellites orbiting Earth.
The negative impact of reflection.
The vast majority of sunlight reaches the Earth because the total surface area of satellites is infinitesimally small compared to the size of the Earth. Therefore reflective impact is so small that it is not considered a significant factor in climate change, calculated on today’s number, but more and larger satellites are planned in the near future, which could increase the effect of the sun’s rays and therefore also our climate.
What could happen if solar storms increase in strength is hard to ignore. If there were a new Carrington effect, the possibility are that most satellites would become unusable or burn up. The risk increases every year according to the latest findings. Only the future will tell….
