Will COP31 be another failure?
Around 45,000 to 60,000 participants attended COP30 in Belem, Brazil, but what did they achieve? The main text guided mitigation, adaptation, and finance agreements. It included 56 consensus decisions by the 194 Parties to the UNF-CCC. 24 of these decisions comprised the Belem Political Package.
Long-Term Targets: Agreements such as the Baku to Belém Roadmap set long-term funding targets (mobilizing $1.3 trillion annually by 2035). The proposal to triple global climate adaptation funding commits to a 2035 timeline, broken down across clean energy, biodiversity, climate adaptation, sustainable transport, climate finance, innovation, and governance. Progress on these decisions will be evaluated over the next decade, rather than marked as completed today.
All this above, sounds very impressing, or not?
I have followed the COP conferences for over 10 years, and the same question arises after every gathering: what is actually being done with this enormous amount of funds? Following you find some examples of how much this amount really is.
- It is greater than the GDP of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the Netherlands, together.
- Equivalent approximately to all the wealth produced by Spain or Australia in one whole year.
- You could buy massive companies like Meta (Facebook), Tesla, or Berkshire Hathaway entirely with cash, and you would still have money left over.
Furthermore, there is talk of improving the global climate by reducing emissions of harmful gases. Yet, nearly 60,000 people gather in various locations, during one week, around the world each year, resulting in an equal number of flights. Wouldn’t it be better to hold these conferences online to reduce emissions?
The only known decision reached at COP30 in Brazil was the appointment of a new president. All other decisions are viewed as future solutions, yet lack a timeline. In the meantime, funds are flowing out to cover projected future costs and as payouts to the corrupt governments of underdeveloped nations.
The “climate conference” will take place at the Antalya EXPO Center in Türkiye from November 9 to 20, 2026. I will follow it closely and send reports, what really will happen this year.
Thank you for reading my post.
